International Field School

This learning experience (and accompanying assessment) sees students travel to an oversees destination and engage in extended, experiential learning. Students are required to complete a combination of on-site assessment such as practical fieldwork, fieldwork journals and presentations, as well off-site assessment such as final research essays based on fieldwork.

Oral exam on written response

Students are randomly assigned 2 questions from a bank of questions that cover most of the course material. They are then asked to write their answers on the blank paper provided. Students are observed whilst writing. Each student is then questioned for 15 minutes, and this oral component is video recorded. They are first questioned about their written responses and must defend their answers (staff highlight any mistakes or gaps in their responses). They are then asked further questions about other aspects of the course.

Reflective Workbook

This workbook technique uses progressive learning pedagogies to inform weekly activities that dynamically build on course content. Through formative and summative tasks, students complete one activity per week for the course duration. Feedback is regularly provided for formative tasks to enhance engagement and promote learning outcomes for higher-level summative tasks.

Unfamiliar Contexts in Invigilated Exams

SCIE1000 covers mathematics, computer programming, communication, science and modelling. The main goal is to help students see that similar tools and approaches can be applied in a wide range of discipline areas and contexts. So my goal was mostly to develop students’ abilities and confidence in transferring knowledge from one context to another context that may initially appear to be quite distinct, but in reality the same general approaches apply. This is important in this course because we teach students from all areas of science.

Unrehearsed Oral Presentation

This practical task see students complete an oral performance during dedicated class time in response to some form of in-situ stimuli, such as a live presentation or audio-visual material. In JAPN7200, students attend weekly live interpreting forums and must orally interpret (from English to Japanese) speeches delivered by guest speakers.
